We’re proud to share that Sawicki Law Firm was recently featured in a powerful investigative article published by Texas Monthly titled “A Mother’s Death Highlights Texas’s Broken Medical-Oversight System”.
The story, written by award-winning journalist Laura Beil, follows the tragic death of Kimberly Ray, a 42-year-old mother from North Texas who passed away following what was supposed to be a routine outpatient procedure. What her grieving family discovered in the aftermath revealed alarming gaps in Texas’s medical oversight system, from questionable medical credentials to a lack of accountability in patient safety.
Attorney Mike Sawicki of Sawicki Law Firm is at the heart of the story. After Kimberly’s father contacted our firm, Mike led a rigorous two-year investigation into the clinic responsible for Kimberly’s care. His work uncovered a troubling network of limited liability companies (LLCs) that obscured the identities and histories of medical professionals involved in her treatment. Some providers had prior records of substance abuse, questionable conduct, or had been dismissed from other facilities yet were still cleared to operate in Texas.
Sawicki’s tenacity and investigative instincts, sharpened from his days as a newspaper reporter, proved essential in unraveling the web of negligence. “There are all sorts of red flags,” he told Texas Monthly. “It may be the old reporter thing that convinced me—if I just look behind curtain number three, I’m going to find more.”
The article not only highlights the significant legal and systemic obstacles families face when seeking justice but also underscores the critical importance of experienced legal counsel in navigating complex medical malpractice claims in Texas, where damage caps and regulatory gaps often limit accountability.
We are honored that our work was recognized in this important piece of journalism and remain committed to fighting for families like the Rays—families seeking answers, justice, and change.
